"In war, everyone loses...

Reaper Lana Harvey is finding out the hard way. When Grim's new second in command, Jenni Fang, recruits her for a special mission, the biggest victory over the rebels is tainted by a crushing and immediate reprisal. The rebels have a new general working in the shadows of Limbo City, luring gods, reapers, demons, and souls to the dark side.

The Afterlife Council’s orders to locate the new rebel base are overshadowed by a desperate and mysterious plea from Grim to find the  abducted Greek god of sleep, Hypnos. Where Lana and Jenni find one, they hope to find the other. But some discoveries have a way of bringing one to their knees.

Death and Loving it!

Vampires, werewolves, and faeries are such page (and screen) hogs these days. From Twilight to Vampire Diaries, Interview with the Vampire to Teen Wolf, you can’t walk down a library aisle or channel surf for more than two minutes without encountering these darlings of the supernatural world. But what about the others that go bump in the night?

Death’s portrayal in literature, television, and film is not nearly as frequent as vamps, weres, or those pesky pixies, but (IMHO) the many faces of Death are far more diverse and interesting. A centuries old vampire with a European accent is such a yawn. A rugged alpha werewolf with a chip on his shoulder is an eye-roll. And a hot-headed, smart-mouthed pixie is… well, okay. Tinker Bell is still hot. But her dozens of successors are brushed from the mind as easily as pixie dust.

Before I began writing my Lana Harvey, Reapers Inc. series, I had only encountered a few visions of Death personified, but they were inspiring enough to get the ball rolling. Since then, friends and readers have introduced me to numerous others, from books, television, and film. Here is a list of a few of my favorites, in no particular order:

1)    Death in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novel series, namely the novel Reaper Man

2)    Reaper and beta-male Charlie Asher in Christopher Moore’s novel A Dirty Job

3)    Brad Pitt in the 1998 film Meet Joe Black

4)    George in the television show Dead Like Me

5)    Sam in the television show Reaper

6)    Charley in Darynda Jones Charley Davidson novel series

7)    Death in the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

8)    Zane in the novel On a Pale Horse by Piers Anthony

9)    Calliope in Amber Benson’s Calliope Reaper-Jones novel series

10) Death in the animated series The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy

I’m aware that some of these characters are not portrayed as the numero uno, head honcho, Death with a capital D. But they’re extensions of Death all the same. The Grim Reaper has evolved. He’s given birth to a whole new species, a species that is quickly rising up to take its place among the supernaturals of popular fiction. Look out Tinker Bell. Death has come. Let the reaping begin.

So tell me, where have you spied Death between the pages (or on the screen) lately?

About Author Angela Roquet

Picture
Urban fantasy author Angela Roquet is a great big weirdo. She collects Danger Girl comic books, owls, skulls, and random craft supplies. Her obsessions include the Wizard of Oz, over-sweetened coffee, and all things Joss Whedon. She's a fan of renewable energy, marriage equality, and religious tolerance. As long as whatever you're doing isn't hurting anyone, she's a fan of you, too.

Angela lives in Sedalia, Missouri with her husband and son. When she's not swearing at the keyboard, she enjoys painting, goofing off with her family and friends, and reading books that raise eyebrows. GRAVEYARD SHIFT, the first novel in Angela's Lana Harvey, Reapers Inc. series, is now available for FREE on Kindle, Nook, & Smashwords.
